Funny how when I came to the self-realization that I may hold myself back, an opportunity was presented to me, that would test if I was ready to change.
I have been looking for a part-time job. My full time job hours were cut due to a change in the residents at the home I work at. There is also a delay in filling the empty rooms at the house. Yesterday, I passed the phone screening for a second job and got a call back that they were only hiring for full-time positions right now. She said I could check back for future part-time positions becoming available. I told them I’d think about it and call back the next day. I decided to take a chance and make the change. I called them back and let them know I’d be interested in full-time employment with them. I’ll stay on at the group home, but make it part-time. Well, since I left them 10 (yes! 10 years ago) for a better opportunity they dc’d my application. It was suggested I edit it and re-apply in 90 days. They are looking for employees that want to be permanent.
Reasons I felt it was time to make a change and if I did not take the job I would be holding myself back:
New job:
- Starting pay is higher than my current pay
- Room for advancement
- Benefits are equal, possibly better
- Wage raise possibilities
- I will be challenged
- Opportunities to use management and training experience
Current job:
- Raise freezes for over a year now
- Limited advancement possibilities
- Limited challenges
- I have been eligible for a merit raise for a year but the funds have not been available
Well the ball is rolling and I am looking more closely at what I do and how I do it. I evaluate if there is a little fear of change (success) influencing what I do. I realize, as much as I hate the idea of a second job, I don’t commit to sitting down and writing with the same dedication when I have to be at a wage earning job certain hours. I’m re-evaluating my writing habits again.
