Blog Post Topic Ideas

Filed under: Blogging, Instructional, Writing — Jan @ 11:48 pm

Writing content for a website can be easy because you write it, put it up, and move on. Blogs are very different, a blog should have 3-4 posts a week once the blog is established. The problem for many is to find topics to write about. I don’t have any trouble finding post topics, my problem is finding time to write everything I want to write! I find inspiration for topics to write on all around!

The first goal should be to write regularly. Here are three easy ways to make sure posts are up weekly:

  1. Write posts for month or week in one sitting. Edit the post date so they post every couple days.
  2. A short post is better than no post, so don’t let not having a lot to write keep your from posting.
  3. Stay on your blog topic as much as possible, but it’s OK a few times a month use “filler posts” (personal events, holidays, random comments) when you are really struggling to come up with a topic.

Where to find inspiration for blog posts:

  • Keywords (on StatCounter (or whatever you use), pick topics from the “keyword activity” option). That keyword got people to your blog, so write a post based on the keyword and maybe they will come back.
  • Commercial-if a company is spending that kind of money on an ad, that means the company researched the interest and felt it was worth the investment.
  • Informal interviews-talk to people you meet daily like in the grocery store, standing line at a fast food place, the clerk at the convenience store, the waitress, etc. Ask them their opinion on what you write about.
  • Other people’s content-don’t steal of course, but after reading someone else’s material, put your spin and personality in it.
  • Magazines-look through old magazines on the topic of your blog. Again…don’t steal of course, but after reading someone else’s material, put your spin and personality in it. The information may be old to the magazine readers, but it may be new to your visitors.

Keep an eye open at all times for blog post topic inspiration.
