Swimming Against the Current

Do you feel like you are swimming against the current? There are three things you can do:

  1. Keep swimming in the direction you are heading
  2.  Float and drift with the current
  3. Adjust the direction you are going

Keep swimming in the direction you are heading

If you are certain you are going in the right direction, don’t stop! Pace yourself so that you do not become exhausted and are forced to do number 2 or number 3. There should be time to do the following to allow you to have the strength to maintain your course:

  • Rest
  • Breaks
  • Relaxation
  • Play
  •  Nourish your body
  • Maintain relationships

Float and drift with the current

If you are already burnt out, this is the best choice as soon as possible. You will be able to regain your strength and can alway return to the direction you were traveling. This is a good choice if you aren’t sure about continuing to swim against the current. While you float and drift with the current you can regroup.

When drifting along you might find the following helpful:

  • Get away from the computer a couple days
  • Talk with others
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and potential of the direction you are going
  • Balance it with less tiresome project
  • Temporarily increase time for fun and relaxation

Put a time limit on how long you will float and drift so not to end up in a stagnant pool.

Adjust the direction you are going

There may be some simple adjustments that you can make to ease the physical toll of heading in the direction you have chosen.  A slight angle might cut the energy used in half allowing for a more productive and  faster swim time. The following may help:

  • Re-evaluate the project goals
  • Delegate
  • Outsource
  • Adjust time tables

Being an entrepreneur, creating passive income, being self-employment, and  not going to college already starts the current against you until you can prove yourself. Don’t allow a poor plan to make it more difficult than it needs to be.
